Rome wasn’t built in a day: Day Six

I’m finally recapping the LAST day of my trip back in May.  Lol.  This post is hard for me to reminisce.  As a result, I had to take some time off from my friends in order to reflect and move forward.  The day started out late.  The groom stayed behind to take care of business, and the uncle of the bride decided to help him.  Our road trip crew got smaller, but off we went.  We were heading back to Rome.
We didn’t mean to head out late but it’s inevitable when you’re traveling with a group of people.  Our 4 hour drive meant we were anticipating on arriving close to rush hour.  Rome is a very busy metropolitan city, and the traffic alone can be hectic.  I knew my friend had a lot on her shoulders driving us down there, along with the fact we couldn’t help out because none of us knew how to drive stick shift.  But we made the commute as light-hearted as possible, snapping away pictures of the countryside and enjoying stories about the wedding that we might have missed.
Our makeup artist friend had a hotel reservation in the center of Rome, not far from where he originally was located on day one.  It was my turn to pay for the hotel this time since my roommate on this trip took care of night one.  Our air b&b was also located in the center of Rome.  We didn’t want to book anything too far away from the Roma Termini station since that was our way back to the airport the next day.  Of course, this was one of the stressful parts of our trip.  Once we entered Rome, my friend warned us about the driving zones within the center of the city.  Because of the size of our group, along with our luggage, we didn’t want to park too far away in order to walk the streets with so many things to carry.  This part alone took over an hour, and it was wearing down our patience.  We finally settled on an indoor overnight parking garage and decided to cab it to our hotels.  I jumped in the same cab as the makeup artist so I could help him check in his hotel, and the girls took my luggage with them and went to check in our air b&b.
Now we were back on track!  We decided to meet up by the Spanish steps so we could continue to sight-see as well as shop around for any souvenirs.  Again, time was slipping away from us due to lack of communication.  The other group was taking a while to meet up with us and we weren’t sure what was going on.  I finally got a hold of my friend and she told us they were on their way.  Me and the makeup artist were under the impression that maybe they decided to hangout on their own and meet up much later, (which would have been fine) since we were waiting around for a bit.  I decided to call back my friend to see how far along were they, and that’s when she mentioned that her aunt was having a hard time keeping up due to knee problems.  Whew!  At least we were now in the loop.
After being apart for close to an hour, we were finally together and trying to decide what to do next.  My hotel rommie wanted to check out some stores, and I wanted to grab a few souvenirs for my mom.  My friend was impatient due to the large crowds, and the makeup artist wanted to sight see.  My friend’s aunt needed to rest, so I sat with her on the Spanish Steps for a bit while everyone checked out the shops in the surrounding area.
Once they were done, we decided to venture out to the Trevi fountain for some picture taking.  Luckily it was not as packed as the first day we were here, but everyone loved snapping away.  My friend was again impatient due to the crowds, but I figured if we took our time we would be able to enjoy more of the experience with the others who have not seen the sights.  We slowly made our way to the Pantheon but arrived too late to go inside.  It is a pretty impressive structural building and I enjoyed my first encounter here.
Next we were on our way to the Piazza Navona.  At this point I stayed behind with the aunt while the others rushed over.  Again, I wasn’t sure what the plans were, so I was under the impression that we were chilling, but everything seemed rushed.  I knew we were going to have dinner at Ba Ghetto again (me and my friend dined there in March) but that wasn’t until later.  Well “later” was creeping up on us and we were not aware of what time it was.  The Piazza Navona was a very busy area that we lost two of our travelers.  We couldn’t find them anywhere.  We walked around the massive fountains but there were so many people here.  It was hard to locate them.  AGAIN our patience was being tested and it was getting the best of us.  I’m not sure any of us on this day were really enjoying ourselves.  It’s frustrating looking back on this.
Once we finally found everyone we had to head back.  My friend needed to retrieve some makeup from the makeup artist back at his hotel.  With the aunt not being able to move so quickly, we decided to walk back to the Spanish steps (me and her) while the others rushed to his hotel.  His place was located on the top of the steps barely two blocks away.  It took us some time to get there, and we even climbed up the steps to take more pictures while waiting to hear back from them.  My friend called me to let me know that they were going back to our air b&b to get ready since the reservations for dinner were at 9pm.  She advised that we take a cab back to the air b&b to meet them there instead.  Again, another frustrating incident of this day.  The cab driver dropped us off at the address we provided, but I’ve never seen the air b&b since I never checked in with the girls earlier that day.  The aunt lead us to a hotel and we rode up the elevator, but then she got confused.  I tried calling my friend but they were not answering.  The makeup artist called me because he just arrived from getting ready at his hotel.  He said the girls ran out of his hotel and he stayed behind.  It seemed that he was at our air b&b but no one was answering the doorbell.  It was then we me and the aunt realized we were at the wrong hotel.  A hotel employee ran up the stairs and yelled at us because we didn’t close the elevator doors correctly and it wasn’t allowing it to go back down.  I was getting upset on how this day was turning out.
When we FINALLY found the correct air b&b (which was an apartment complex) the girls were already dressed and ready to head out.  I told them to leave without me.  I had to get ready as well and was upset that they wouldn’t answer our calls earlier (they definitely jumped in the showers back to back).  I needed some time to recoup, but they insisted on waiting on me (which I hated).  I had some friends from Amsterdam that happened to be in Rome the same time we were here.  They wanted to catch with me over drinks.  I wanted to skip dinner and hangout with them but my friend wanted me to join them instead for dinner.  I went along.  I wish I hadn’t.
Dinner believe it or not was fine.  The food is always delish at Ba Ghetto and I was feeling good off the wine.  My Dutch friends wanted to know what time I would be done with dinner.  I told my friend I was going to join them for a bit.  The crew was going to go back to their hotels to get some sleep.  This day was indeed exhausting.  The rest is history.  I jumped in a cab and headed to Campo di Fiori to meet up with my friends.  There I enjoyed a glass of wine  and we talked about our time here in Rome.  I did not feel I was out long, but of course, some might argue that claim.  In the end, the night turned out disastrous for me and probably for the rest of the crew.  I wish I could have done things differently, but as they say, you live and you learn.  I think the only lesson I could pin point for me is that I should have followed my instincts and did my own thing after the wedding.  As I’m getting older I’m realizing it can be draining being around so many people.  I miss my time traveling alone.

Sangria and Spa Night

The last weekend of 2017 I got a chance to spend it with old friends.  I’ve known these girls for almost 20 years and it was fun catching up.  One of them moved to Florida, but was in town visiting family and friends during the holidays.  She decided to throw a spa night at her mom’s place to introduce us to a new skincare line.  She’s currently working with them and is very impressed with their results.  Who are we to turn down beauty secrets?  She made it more appealing by having sangria and tapas as well!  I love low key Saturday nights.  I’ve grown to appreciate a more intimate setting nowadays.  Regardless, I was very fortunate to see my old friends during the holidays, and as a result, will try to make it a habit to visit them once in a while wherever they reside now.  I can’t wait to tell you about my recent road trip to Detroit!  Until next time…

Leña Brava

I am still recapping the weekend my friend was here to attend a funeral.  I stayed low key that Saturday, but we made plans on Sunday to have dinner downtown.  She picked me up and we drove down to Randolph street where we going to meet another friend of ours.  This friend, too, happened to be in Chicago to attend a wedding.  It was nice seeing her as well.  For a brief moment, it felt like everything was normal again.  Until we realized that the last time we all saw each, our circumstances were different.  It was hard to catch up to where we are today.  Yet I couldn’t help but feel fortunate that we were sharing things that were very difficult for us.  I truly believe we need to strengthen our relationships when life is going well.  Because the reality is Life will be completely unfair sometimes, and it will knock you down.  We need to cherish our friendships as much as we can.  No drama should separate the bond that you share with your loved ones.

Since red is in this season, I wore my vintage Dooney & Burke.

Love them TREMENDOUSLY!!

Spreading myself thin...

Every year, I tell myself I will finish my Christmas shopping early, and every year I end up frantically looking for stuff to get on the 24th.  Talk about procrastination!  I really want to work on this because I loathe shopping at the last minute for people.  Not to mention, I sometimes feel I settle for something that might not be appropriate for them, but at least they got a gift from me.  NOT GOOD!  I want to be thoughtful on my gift giving and those things take time.  I fell in that trap again this year and I was miserable.
I have a friend whose birthday lands on Christmas Eve, and since this time it landed on a Saturday, I had a feeling she might be celebrating on Friday instead.  I have not caught up with her since her birthday last year and felt terrible about that already.  We use to hangout years ago, but then our little group changed due to the breakups of our boyfriends.  I sometimes miss those days, but looking back, so much has happened after that.  Things changed.  I reached out to her via text and she told me she was going to be out for a birthday dinner but afterwards might step out elsewhere.  We played it by ear and I felt good about it.
Until I decided to do some more Christmas shopping.  Since now my aunt was hosting, and we found out a few days beforehand, I wanted to pick some gifts up for my cousins.  Because I was trying to rush to the stores to find something, I ended up slipping on ice and hurting myself.  That's what happens when you're mind is all over the place.  Besides bruising my ego, I got back up and ran off to 6 corners.
I was on a roll looking for things when I received a text from the birthday girl.  Two friends had backed out of the dinner and she asked me if I could make it out by 8pm in place of them.  I was stuck.  There was no way I could get to Lincoln Park in 45 minutes.  I still had to go home and get ready and make my way there.  Plus I needed more time to finish up my shopping.  I told her I couldn't make it but to count me in after dinner if they go out.  She seemed fine with it, and I continued shopping for my cousins.
I made my way back home flustered, but satisfied.  I wanted to relax a bit, so I took my time getting ready.  I knew something was up when my phone was blowing up.  There was a group text with my friends going back and forth.  Our friend from Detroit was in town for the holidays.  She was at a nearby suburbs doing some shopping herself.  We were trying to set up a time and place to meet up, but it wasn't working out.  I continued getting ready and right when I was figuring out what to wear, I got a call from my Detroit friend:
"Get ready, we're coming to pick you up."
"Wait!  What?"
"We'll be there in 7.  We're going to Café Iberico."
YIKES!  I was stuck.  I thought about my friend in Lincoln Park.  Her dinner was at 8pm and now it's 9:15pm.  I was thinking about meeting them up after 10pm.  But since my other friend wanted to eat something at Café Iberico, we would be downtown.  I figured I'll take advantage of the free car ride and then excuse myself at one point to go join the other party.  I was spreading myself thin, but at the time it seemed like a good idea.
She arrived approximately in 7 minutes, just like she stated.  Off we went.  I miss her little baby.  We all caught up with one another and were enjoying ourselves.  I kept looking at my phone but did not hear from the birthday girl.  She texted me that she was still at the restaurant around 10:15pm.  I replied that I was making my way downtown, but I was trying to kill some more time.  I continued my evening with my friends and then she texted back after 11pm to come to the restaurant.
Over the years, she would normally paint the town red.  I was hoping she was going to do the same and go out so I could join her somewhere but she was still at the restaurant.  By this time. she had been at the restaurant for over 3 hours.  I panicked.  I told my friends I had to make this party and left.  I cabbed it over to Lincoln Park and made it in 10 minutes flat.  The party made it's way next door to a pub.  I joined them, but I knew something was up.  They were pretty drunk by now, but the party was much smaller.  Some people left after dinner.  As we caught up, there were so many changes in the works.  I felt bad missing out so much of her life.  To make matters worse, she was pretty hurt those 2 friends who did not show up to her party.  I felt incredibly guilty for showing up late.
I did not know what to do.  I felt I had let everyone down.  And I still wasn't done with my Christmas shopping.  I found out at the last minute that my step brother was going to join us for Christmas Eve dinner.  Another one I had to find a gift for.
I rode with my friend in a cab to make sure she got home ok.  It was the least I could do.  I just hope I didn't blow it with her.
How could I leave him so soon??

I had to make more time for him!!  He lives so far away...

His Ralph Lauren sweater is on point!

Made it to see this babe!

I need to make it up to her somehow...

November Wedding

I can't believe Christmas is almost here!  I have been mostly looking for stuff to decorate my apartment, but have had no such luck.  I want to be able to LOVE the items, not just fill up some space.  Unfortunately, this season nothing really stands out for me.  Oh well.
Recapping November was difficult, mostly because of the outcome of the election.  I am not afraid to say I voted for HER, but now that things have been moving along, I'm still saddened by the truth of who is our newly elected president is.  I am in disbelief that people actually voted for him in general, and wonder how the opposing party's vision truly stands with my values.  To be honest, my values have always been to live in a world that peacefully resides with one another; where we can be welcomed to visit and learn different customs and cultures.  Never in a million years would I be compelled to feel that people do not matter to me because they think, look, act differently than me.
Is it wrong for me to think that way?
After the election, I felt sick to my stomach and did not do much the following weekend.  I was in a state of shock.  Talking to my mom made me snap back in reality, mostly because I heard how my mother was handling the news of our current situation.  People have developed fear because of this, but I couldn't accept that anymore.  Yes, he may have won this election, but time will truly tell if our country made the right decision or not to appoint him.  In the meantime, all we can do is live our lives and love our friends and family and continue to contribute to society in this country of ours.
Luckily I had to attend a wedding for a friend of mine the weekend after that.  It was nice to remember what's important to me, which is to celebrate happiness whenever it's around!  I won this dress off ebay early in the year and I finally got a chance to wear it out.  Since this wedding was in the middle of November, it was perfect to wear something heavier and pair it with black opaque tights instead of bare legs.  Everyone had a wonderful time and we stayed out afterwards too!  I am grateful to have been invited and wish my friends the best in their marriage!

A Road Trip to the Motor City!

Part 2 of our weekend getaway in Michigan landed us in Detroit.  It was hard for us not to swing by considering how close it was to Grosse Point.  We went out for brunch and enjoyed our time there before deciding on the last minute.  We had some time to kill, but didn't want to drive out too late once it got dark.  Our friends led us into the city as we watched people tailgate for football Sunday.  We were impressed by the up and coming businesses arriving to the Motor City, and even past by the Chrysler plant along the way.  But the abandoned buildings and lots is what blew our mind.  I've never seen such a vast vacant city in my life.  It felt weird but hopefully in a few years, that won't be the case.
We ended up in downtown Detroit and decided to stop by a café to load up on caffeine before driving back to Chicago.  We miss our friend very much and this trip assured us she'll be fine in Michigan with her new family.  Next time we promised to explore more of the neighboring towns surrounding  Grosse Point!

Feeling like a Stuffed Turkey

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!  I had 3 major dinners last week and I'm still eating leftovers from each one!  lol.  Needless to say, I feel blessed I have a full fridge during this rainy week, but now I am determined than ever to go on a holiday detox.  I hate the feeling of wearing tight pants.  No matter what anyone says, YOU KNOW when the weight gain starts settling in.  hahaha!
Back in October, our good friend moved out to Grosse Point Michigan.  We miss her very much, so during her move, we decided to take a road trip two weeks after she settled in her new home.  We figured we would visit her sooner than later before the holidays crept up.  Luckily we had a smooth drive out there and enjoyed the changing colors of autumn along the way.
We ended up in Grosse Point later than we had anticipated.  We wanted to drive out early in the morning so we could enjoy more of the day, but of course that did not happen.  We're late for EVERYTHING, so this was no exception.  We arrived after 6pm and luckily while it was still light outside.  Our friend gave us a grand tour of her new home and we went for a stroll in her neighborhood.
By the time we got back to her place, we were aware the Cubs game was going to be on soon.  The Cubs were playing the Dodgers to see who would go to the World Series.  I promised my brothers I would watch a Cubs game once they ever made it to the World Series, but here we were, about to clinch that opportunity of a lifetime!  We decided to go watch it at a family friendly restaurant so we could have dinner as well.  We made our way to downtown Grosse Point and settled in Luxe Bar and Grill where we munched on mahi tacos and salmon salad.
Well by now you already know we won the World Series.  lol.  That night we clenched the National League Championship.  It was a wonderful night for us, even though we were celebrating out in Michigan instead.  We finished up our celebration back at their home where we played 90s hip hop songs and danced around.  That's what I love about my friends.  We can make a party anywhere.
I am looking forward to the holidays.  It gives you the opportunity to see family and friends you haven't seen in a while and to make new memories.  I can't wait!

CUBS WIN CUBS WIN!!!

Our Chicago Cubs did it!!  They broke the longest drought in baseball history!  Our city is beyond ecstatic!  It was definitely the most nerve wrecking game I have ever witnessed in my life.  So many highs and lows.  Even if you weren't a fan of both teams, you can't deny the way they played the game.  Commentators were split down the middle on who might win game 7.  Little did they know, their predictions were almost on point.  This series could have went either way.  Both teams were talented and driven.  I'm not a sports analyst but it was obvious these two teams were the best.  They gave everyone a run for their money.
Even though I referred back to my earlier posts on the sense of entitlement, looking back, I could see the ambition on the Cleveland Indians.  They were not going to let us win by no means necessary.  They beat us pretty bad in our own stadium back to back.  Our morale was down all weekend.  The comeback on game 5 gave us an ounce of hope that Cub fans needed to continue our support.  We felt as though our chances of winning the series was slipping through our fingers  .  Very few people were optimistic after our terrible losses, but then there was the love and dedication of some fans who reminded us the series was not over yet.  The infamous Cubs curse would follow us for so many years, we got use to hearing our team would never make it to the World Series.  Funny how words could impact us, but then again, isn't that the case in our everyday lives?  Words can make you or break you depending on your level of confidence.  Experiences can make you or break you as well , but in the end, your level of perseverance is what matters most in life.  The many times you get back up is what counts in the end.
Life will throw you so many out of context situations, sometimes you think the world is working against you.  I've heard so many tragic stories in my lifetime.  Some of them would break your heart.  In no way are they suppose to teach you anything except that sometimes shit happens.  We might look around for answers, especially if it's something that has hurt us for no apparent reason.  Yet the answer is always the same.  Shit happens.
During the last week in September, I had to attend an event that happened unexpected.  Details were so last minute, I didn't even know what I was attending.  At first, the details were sketchy, but in most private matters, I had to learn not to ask any questions that weren't mine to ask.  All I knew was that I was being asked to attend by someone who I considered to be an outstanding individual.  You can't prepare for things like this.  You can only do what your part in intended to do.  I couldn't pass up my opportunity to do show my loyalty and gratitude.
In the end, I look back at that night and realize how much my friend is loved.  I can't help but compare that to the win of the World Series.  I'm not sure if us Chicagoans were prepared to feel what we felt last night, but we did it.  It's one of the best moments I wish everyone could feel once in their lifetime.  We all deserve this type of happiness!  The same goes for those unexpected moments we will experience in our lifetime.  I wish everyone could be surrounded by the people you love and know, they got your back, no matter what you're going through.  It is truly priceless...

I wore a short one sleeved dress and tights for my unexpected evening.

I don't know about you, but I LOVE this chair!!  It's so divine!

Selfie time...

Good times with friends and family...

Afterwards, I caught up with my friend at La Mez.  90s music is always a good idea!
